-Old systems and old cultures will be destroyed because of the New World Economy
-Defining line of classes: The New World Economy will help those who can keep up with it (which will be defined as the upper class) and those who can NOT keep up with it (which will be defined as the lower class)
-Countries that won't benefit from the New World Economy are those who aren't open to new things, those who aren't unified, and those who are not as advanced and doing very badly
-Countries that will benefit from the New World Economy are those who are open to new things and who maybe aren't doing the best right now but plan on getting better
-Countries need to unify in order to benefit from the New World Economy
-We need to work together, globally, to get things done
-We need to stop thinking selfishly and get more involved and do things globally
-The new world economy will favor places like China and India because their government has more control over the people
5-12 Discussion Day 3 Notes:
what are human institutions? churches, international organizations, how do they help?
rushing decisions more likely to make mistakes
no predictions about the economy
time matters a lot, many changes have been made since this book was written
similar problems are out there, seeking credit and a reputation
change in the way the world is run, has not explained how to take action
can't change large groups quickly - not able to adapt and take the risk of changing
to make a global change you need all the major countries to consent
for unification you need a common goal
starting to help the world at a younger age will go farther
you cant control what the people will be doing with money you give them
5-14 Discussion Notes:
Answers to questions:
1. Global Warming and underlying issues. The ones whose effects will happen sooner or later. Education is also a mix with poverty in terms of underlying issues. Our group thinks that education should be the top priority. Problem with sub employment because the rich countries will take the jobs for the new world economy and the poor countries will have educated people working on farms instead of what they were trained for so there could be a waste in aid money.
2. Not really. The government is too busy with all the problems they are confronted with to solve any one problem well. The youth is networking well but the governments that are in place right now are not networking well because of old communist vs. democratic society conflicts taking away from focus of the problem at hand.
3. Not by the government but network is but networking is spreading. The government may be planning to do what he said but it is just taking a long time to enact the effects of them but we really don’t know if the governments are doing that.
4. The UN hadn’t developed experienced war strategies on terrorism because the war on terror had just begun so when he was talking about networking in the military we realized things had changed.
5. They are very adaptive to the way the new world economy works and take advantage of it but we have gotten better at taking advantage of it since 2001 so it’s getting harder for them.
6. Yes because it is connected to many other problems and in some cases we have to solve other issues in order to solve poverty.
7. Yes because it is essential for every human being and it would effect everybody so there would be support and there will be conflict anywhere there will be large amounts of it.
8. Yes because the wars are just there so western society can supply itself. It moved from Asia to the Middle East why couldn’t it move from the middle east to somewhere else if there is something valuable to be acquired or ideals to change.
Passage notes:
The fishery depletion may shake the western world because it many places there are dependent on fishing so poverty zones won’t just be in Africa and Asia. The water defecit isn’t in the near future for hurting us because we have developed a lot of clean water systems like Brita and the places where it is kind of starting to take effect is Africa but Africa is a cesspool of conflicts and problems so people just tend to not care because there is always something going on their. The example of using insurance companies to talk about what is going in the world is another example of supporting evidence he uses because insurance companies will say everything is going bad in order to raise prices.
Connection Notes:
Environmental problems are more important than they seem because they can affect absolutely everything in our society and shake the foundations it is based off of.
5-18 Discussion
Discussion Question Notes:
1. We have done well on some parts of fixing global problems, but not on others. We are/were failing to fix these global problems because we are not ahead of our global issues, we are behind them.
2. Drugs spread so quickly and so much because people like them and they bring in money and they are easily made. It would be beneficial to the new world economy if we make not as severe drugs legal because so many people use it and it would bring in a lot of money.
3. The new world economy could really help all of us and the benefits would really help us but there would also come a lot of cons. In the long run, it is worth it.
4. Mis of two reasons: Education, people aren't educated enough to actually know about the world's problems and they don't understand the problems so we can't have a global drive if not everyone knows what the problem is. The second reason is that we lack the global unity to move in the direction to fix the problems. It's not that we don't have the global drive it's that we don't have the global unity.
5. The new world economy will fix things if people open up, but only if it doesn't happen too fast. Although, the new world economy will have a ton of new things and new thoughts everywhere and it's going to be an overwhelming amount of new information so it is going to be hard for people but it could really help. If you don't open up then you're holding yourself down and your not going to realize all the new ideas you can have and pursue.
6. We aren't unified because we can't get over our differences. The world is divided into segments right now: the big countries, then there's the second world countries which are a little below the big countries but below enough for us to treat them differently, and then we have the third world countries which every steps on and doesn't care about. We need to put aside our differences and treat everyone equally in order to unify everyone. We need to stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking GLOBALLY.
7. Global rules are very important, we need one standard one rulebook. We need a world standard instead of everyone living off of 20 different standards and rules; we need to be more unified. In the new world economy it is very important to set rules because there is going to be a lot of new things and new ideas and they can go out of control and make their own rules if we don't set boundaries for them.
8. Global rulebook is very important, being unified, having global rules and global standards that we follow so we can be unified. We have to work together.
9. If your not a global citizen you won't be involved, you'll be isolated and you won't be able to have a say in what is happening. If you're not thinking in a global perspective things are going to get complicated when you see everyone else making these decisions and acting globally and your not.
10. There is some progress, we haven't solved solved any of them, but there are only a few that have gotten really really bad, which is good and bad. We are making progress in other issues, and it's good that we only have a few really bad issues (poverty, education, environment) but it's bad that these problems have gotten so out of hand and within those problems we have subproblems.
11. People are anxious and afraid about things not getting fixed, but a lot of people are content and don't want to change anything because they don't know how it will turn out. But if half the world changes and the other half doesn't its just as bad.
Passage Notes:
-PASSAGE 1: Drug trafficking is in affect in all countries, there isn't a country where you can say they don't use drugs, they don't make drugs, they aren't involved in drugs. This is important, it's a big deal and it's global.
-PASSAGE 5: poverty is an underlying problem
-PASSAGE 6: This is very important because its true; every day you put off an issue it gets worse and worse and worse.
Connection Notes:
-We use electronic money (transactions over eBay or iTunes, it is being used and this is an example that we are chaning.
-When our economy plummeted, so did everyone else's. This shows that we are connected to the world and that we didn't advance or prepare for something like this to happen.
-Debate about intellectual property rights... people want to have rights and they want to know that it's secure.
-We have a big problem with immigration and immigration is also a problem in lesser developed countries because they are trying to advance but they can't because their skilled workers are leaving to get more money and the immigrants aren't very skilled workers.

-Link 2 & 3: Drug trafficking, the penalties of drugs, first and second offenses.
5-21 Discussion
Increase status to make people think that your are doing something good - Abe to say that they did something good for society - Abel to fix the small ones now and then big ones later, leave for someone else to do - If a small problems are fixed it gives us confidence then we worry about the bigger ones - Small progress has been made on the global issues - Change in political party in power, made it easier to get stuff through congress - Small number makes it easier to start the group, and made the rules, then bring in people and tell them the rules. Rule will be made to their advantage - Small number makes for a closer relation ship - If they screwed up that bad then why would you let them stay, depends on the the degree of how bad you fail - Denied if the people did not have the knowledge of the subject - Big group and you fail then you would be replaced but in a small group you would still stay
Passage - The world fears the global issue problems - Corruption, global power, won’t be able to have as much power - Still ignoring the big problems fix the global problems - Don’t want to face the problems and will be difficult - Lots of people who know what they are doing but we don’t use them back to the dog year theory
Connection - Lack of boundaries is bad – don’t know when to stop - Enforcement is necessary motivation (teachers) - Inspiration is needed to move forward - Giant balancing act all the school work and sports and other extracurricular activities
Research - Lasts G7 meeting talked about what they were doing and starting to get to work but it seems really late and they are worried about other stuff that they don’t need to be - Not the same reason for use
- Transparency. Net shows corruption in the countries and ranks them.
